As if Lauren Conrad hasn’t inspired us enough—the dark nails, her fashion line, the way she handles drama—now it’s her hair style we’re after. Just how do you get the perfect braid? Hair stylist Shelly Murray from Mine Style Source (177 East Broadway, Vancouver) has the answer.

How do you get the perfect side braid?
Always start by sectioning the hair for a deep side part. You want to separate the front inch and a half of your hair – basically where your bangs would be if you had them – put the rest of your hair in a ponytail or clip to keep the section clean. Comb the hair neatly, and then start french braiding, combing the hair after every section. Once you have french braided to where your bangs would stop, finish up with a normal braid, tie off with a clear elastic. Now, take out your ponytail and if you wish, pin the braid back under some of the longer hair for a softer look.

How would you rock this look?
A girls night out, or maybe going to see a band. Rock it with an oversized top, skinny jeans and ankle boots or peep toe heels. Or dressed down on a date with a tank top, [boyfriend] cardigan, jeans and some moccasins.

Any fancy name for this style?
Not really, I like to think of it as a Heidi braid – more German-inspired, not in relation to Heidi and Spencer.

Is there a certain type of cut or hair type this works best on?
Longer hair definitely works better for this look – shoulder length or longer. But all textures work. This style would also look amazing on curly or wavy hair.
