This week’s Girl of the Week is DIANNA CHU of local Vancouver fashion blog, The Broke Runway. Her blog exemplifies her love of thrift shopping (mostly second-hand and consignment items), which is what drew me to her blog in the first place. The concept was different and her outfits are adorable. Dianna is a Special Education Assistant by day and a lover of fashion at all other hours of the day. She grew up with three sisters and used to steal clothes from them, but now that she lives on her own, she has to make do with her own wardrobe (and has done quite well if I do say so myself). Meet Dianna.
Wearing…I love prints and bright colors, and this outfit is reminiscent of that fact. I am wearing a vintage Blue Ruby blouse that I purchased from Value Village. My black Braemar Petites skirt was also purchased there; though I shortened the hem quite a bit to update the look. My Enzo Angiolini nude pumps and quilted black purse were also discovered at Value Village. I purchased the leopard print Jessica beret from Sears.
My personal style is…Somewhat schizophrenic. It is highly dependent on my mood, and whether or not I feel like putting together an outfit that day. On certain days I desperately want to dress myself in skirts and dresses, pinks and purples or anything floral. Other days, I am content wearing my runners and hoodie, or anything else that is warm and cozy!
Best Christmas gift received…A portrait painted of my two older sisters and I, back when we were children. My boyfriend had this painting commissioned from an amateur artist several years ago, and the present caught me completely off guard. I love gifts that are thoughtful, personal and sentimental.
New Year’s fashion resolutions…In 2011, I am determined to expand my collection of both vintage and costume jewelry. Classic items like these take up little storage space and transcend time.
First memorable fashion purchase…My Cowichan sweater is one of the best investment pieces that I discovered at Value Village several years ago. I have been searching for an authentic design and craftsmanship by the Cowichan First Nations as opposed to the mass-produced sweaters. Consequently, when I first laid eyes on this sweater at Value Village, I could not believe it! It was a perfect fit. It also had a beautiful knitted eagle on the back. And it was only $7.99!
Three items in my bag…I never leave the house without my iphone, keys and credit cards.
One thing every girl should have…Big. Sexy. Voluptuous. Hair!
Beauty must-haves…I love my Joico Finishing Spray and Hot Rollers set. In addition, I cannot live without my MAC blush colours, Style and Dame.
Favourite local shops…Value Village and Front & Company, rummaging through clothing racks and feverishly hunting for sale items.
Drink of choice…In the morning I prefer a warm mug of green tea. At night however, I would much prefer a long island iced tea.
Most prized possession…Health is wealth, and I wouldn’t sacrifice my health for anything. Except for the occasional pizza, chocolate, instant noodles and Spam. Yes, I said Spam. I love Spam.
On the weekends you can find me…Reading magazines at the gym and then rewarding all that hard work by dining out afterwards!
