I’m all about the glitz and glam, so meeting Elsa Corsi and discovering her fabulous collection of jewels and gems had me floored and in awe. Elsa was so sweet and gracious when she humbly admitted to being the designer behind the crystal encrusted bracelet and dazzling tear drop earrings my bff purchased for her upcoming wedding. If you love vintage inspired jewellery that evokes old Hollywood, Elsa Corsi has got you covered. Her jewellery collection is like my bedazzled dreams come true. I caught up with Vancouver’s very own glittering gem to find out more.
Tell us about your background and how you got into jewellery design
I always say that the jewellery choose me. When I started in 1999, or should I say before I started designing, I had made myself a hair band and belt out of some vintage, gold Swarovski crystals. While wearing them in LA during a buying trip for my mother’s store, the buyer from Fred Segal fell in love with them and ordered several dozen on the spot! On the same day, a few hours later while shopping on Robertson Blvd, the owner of Kitson also placed an order on the spot for Tori Spelling. Those are signs that you just can’t ignore!
Who is the Elsa Corsi girl?
The Elsa Corsi girl loves the glamour of Old Hollywood, loves tradition but is not old fashioned. She loves quality and fine things, but isn’t frivolous. She is sentimental, and her jewellery box will tell you the story of her most memorable occasions.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I love the Red Carpet and the Oscars definitely set the trends. It was after Angelina wore those amazing Lorraine Schwartz 115-carat emerald drop earrings that the color green became popular again in jewellery!
Are you a big jewellery collector yourself? What are some of your most prized pieces?
I do have a good collection, but my clients get all the best pieces! I feel too guilty keeping them for myself and have been known to sell what I am wearing right off of me. I can’t help it – I just love to share the sparkly love! Right now, I love wearing my great grandmothers watch amongst my stack of crystal bracelets. It works with my other pieces but most importantly, it reminds me of what’s really important.
What are some of the accessory trends you are seeing for F/W 2011?
Stacking bracelets and a lot more vintage inspired jewellery. There are great jewellery wardrobe staples that every girl should own regardless of the trends: a big CZ stud, a long strand of pearls and a really great pair of longer earrings!
Most rewarding part of your job?
I love it when my clients come back for more! Sometimes they start with one piece and then get the other corresponding pieces later for birthdays or special occasions. I love being a part of their memorable moments!
And just for fun…
Three items you always carry in your bag
A stack of business cards, my Mahina wallet and a leopard print studio key.
What are your wardrobe staples?
Black dresses (the perfect canvas for accessorizing) and lots of jewellery!
What are your beauty must haves?
The Arbonne Night Repair Cream and Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer.
