Vancouver Gets Gossipy at the SMUT Soiree – Part 1

This past Thursday, I attended the first ever West Coast edition of the famed SMUT Soiree. The event, hosted by famed gossip-hound Elaine “Lainey” Lui, brought local gliteratti together to discuss all the latest dirt in the celebrity gossip world – you know, like 19-year-old Miley Cyrus’s engagement! Set at the Vancouver Urban Winery, this was the first Soiree to be held in Vancouver. Lainey has been running the event in Toronto for the past six years, so it was very exciting for her to bring it back to her home base of Vancouver. It was definitely a night to see and be seen – there was primping at the John Frieda hair lounge, makeup from Stila, and lash applications from Ardell Lash, so guests were all looking their best!

I was thrilled go to the Soiree, mainly because I have a not-so-secret obsession with all things celebrity culture related, but also because one of my favourite personalities from The Hills days was going to be there. No, not Lauren Conrad. Dan Levy! I was lucky to get a few minutes to chat with both Lainey and Dan, so of course I had to ask them what they were wearing – wouldn’t be The Style Spy without a bit of shopping chat, right?

Check out Part 1 of my interview with Lainey and come back tomorrow for Part 2 with Dan.

So this is your first SMUT Soiree in Vancouver!
I love it here, this is home! When I’m working with eTalk, I do it remotely and I fly back. I’m probably in Toronto once a month, but home base is Vancouver. This is our first time here, and I live here and we’ve never done a SMUT Soiree here. We’ve always done them in Toronto and I felt like it was ready for Vancouver. I hope people have a good time! The tickets sold out quickly. I’m more nervous for the Vancouver one then I’ve ever been for the Toronto one!

Is it because this is your home?
It is, but also because Vancouver can be a tricky scene and I know that. Ultimately, I want people to have a good time!

What was your day like in terms of event prep?
I’m not going to lie, I woke up at 4:00am today because I had to blog (the business is the blog!) and I had to shoot for eTalk. So I didn’t actually start getting ready until I went to get my hair done at 2:00pm. My stylist is Victor at Rain, I love Rain and I love Victor! I haven’t seen him in awhile, but I wanted something off my face so I told him to give me a braid. Then I went home and I took a nap, checked my emails to see if I missed any breaking stories, and then started getting ready at about quarter to six.

Tell me about your outfit, what are you wearing tonight?
These are my current favourite shoes, they’re Alice + Olivia and they’re actually straight up neon. I wanted to make sure the shoes got the play they deserved, so I wanted to stay in all black. The jeans are 34 Heritage, [the jacket] is Alexander Wang. I joked around on Twitter, I don’t know if I got a tuxedo blazer or a member’s only jacket! It’s hilarious but that’s Wang, nothing is just  straight up. This necklace is French Connection, it’s a good accessory with all black. My whole thing is high-low, so I’ll do a high-end shoe and keep the rest basic.

So what are some of your “low end” basics?
I get great accessories from French Connection. Accessories just have to be eye-catching and current, so French Connection is a great option for that. I love a plain t-shirt, there’s nothing like a plain t-shirt with a kick-ass pair of heels. There are obviously statement pieces that you have to have, like a great blazer or a leather jacket. Jeans or shorts don’t have to be high end, and you can build around that outfit. For instance, my tank top is American Apparel. Half my wardrobe is American Apparel!

What are you most looking forward to wearing this summer?
I love shoes, so I’ve got my neon pumps, and I got an amazing pair of Balenciaga wedges, they’re snakeskin black and white. I have a great pair of tuxedo pants from The Row that I think I’m going to wear to a wedding. I’m the emcee, so I wanted to be respectful of the occasion but also a little bit costume-y. I got a really great floral print Erdem dress and I’ve got to find an occasion to wear it!

What are you favourite places to shop when you’re in Vancouver?
I’m obsessed with Basquiat. I love them! They’re one of the only places in Canada that I’ve found where you can get Barbara Bui. She makes some amazing shoes!
