Whether I’m shopping online or in-store, I always gravitate towards dresses first. It’s hard to find a good pair of pants and frankly, if you sit at an office all day working, it’s much more comfortable to do so in a dress. While I love airy and breezy silk dresses in the spring and summer, I sadly admit they are not practical nor warm enough during the colder months. The dresses at this time of year are definitely a different animal. Think textures, prints and heavier weight fabrics to keep you chic and toasty. These are the fall dresses you need right now.
The Printed Dress... This dress is a bit of a departure from my wardrobe’s mostly neutral colour palette but it caught my eye when I saw it on the mannequin in the window. Prints don’t have to be scary. The blue/red southwest-inspired print is striking on its own or as a wardrobe accent paired with a leather moto jacket or blazer. Though summer has barely left, I’ve already starting wearing this dress with flats and will switch to tights and ankle booties soon enough. Southwest Bound Shift Dress, $33.80 CAD, Forever 21.
A jewel toned dress… While I love grey, red and camel for fall, rich and luxe jewel tones like purple and emerald are also my favourite hues for the season. The dark purple dress from A Wear is classic through and through. The rusched sleeves and subtle drape and fold in the front makes this sheath dress anything but boring. The rich green hue of the Zara dress is also tough to beat. The dropped waist is easy to wear and the funnel neck nicely frames your face. A Wear Exclusive V Neck Wrap Dress, $89.17 CAD, ASOS and Funnel Neck Dress, $59.90 CAD, Zara.
Dress with (faux or real) leather… Leather is having a moment this season and it simply cannot be ignored. This faux leather dress is fun yet edgy. And at $80, it’s not a grandiose investment that may not serve you well next year. Maybe not so appropriate for work unless you work in a creative environment, but it’s a great lil’ number to take on the town. ASOS Petite Exclusive Dropped Waist PU Dress, $80.25 CAD, ASOS.
A simple dress with boat or scoop neck… Sometimes it’s good to just stick with a basic style and silhouette. The fit and flare skirt is flattering on almost all body types but I especially love dresses like this because they’re so versatile. Make it cozy with an infinity scarf or make it glam with a statement necklace. The possibilities are endless with this one. Black Swan Olivia Ponte Knit Fit & Flare Dress, $97.10 CAD, Nordstrom.
