It’s DIY Time: P.S. – I Made This Graphic Lacquer Tray Workshop at West Elm

This past weekend, I decided to test my DIY skills (who says I’m not crafty) at a DIY Graphic Lacquer Tray Workshop at West Elm. The event was to celebrate the new book “P.S. – you’re invited” by Erica Domesek, the crafty gal behind the popular blog P.S. – I Made This.

west-elm-1Early Saturday morning kicks off with coffee (thank god!) and fresh biscotti from the West Elm Market. The lacquer trays are ready to go!

west-elm-2Here’s a sample of the “after” product. No pressure. I don’t remember the last time I DIY’d.

west-elm-7The supplies. Pretty simple, you start off with your lacquer tray, paper is to sketch your design, metallic tape, chalkboard paint, a sponge brush, pen, plastic cup and scissors.

west-elm-3These West Elm Heirloom gold scissors are adorable. Yup, they went home with me too.

west-elm-6Sarah from West Elm gives us a demo. Outline the tray with your design (in this case, slanted triangles) and then use the sponge brush dipped in black chalkboard paint to carefully fill in. The paint takes about 10 minutes to dry.

west-elm-5My neighbour, Vanessa from Modern Mix Vancouver outdid everyone at the table by making this bling-worthy design.

west-elm-4The finished product! Not too bad for a gal who hasn’t DIY’d in years. Erica Domesek herself liked my Instagram photo. No big deal.

This was West Elm’s (Vancouver) first in-store event, they’ll be kicking off a series of events this fall/winter.
