Vancouver Label To Love: Balsam And Vine

balsamvine3As a Vancouverite, jewellery label Balsam and Vine speaks to my very heart. Comprised of dreamy bohemian pieces named after west coast locales, the pieces are bespoke, yet wearable. Not only do the styles mix and match perfectly, but they’re also super affordable and addictive. From candy coloured friendship bracelets to the tassel embellished necklaces, I promise you will want to start a growing collection. After perusing her whimsical editorial, it’s obvious that South African born, West Coast bred designer, Robynne Liebenberg cites the likes of Stevie Nicks and Isabel Marant as fashion icons. Her jewels are timelessly effervescent, appropriate for free-spirited icons across any era. The Style Spy caught up with the gal behind the label to talk trends, inspiration and festival season, just in time for summer.

Balsamvine1Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started Balsam and Vine

After working in the fashion industry for almost 10 years, I felt the need to start creating and using my hands again. A couple years back, I bought a necklace at the Rose Bowl Flea Market with an engraving that read, “Do what you Love, Love what you do,” and I decided to take this mantra and run with it. I wanted to create a line that was affordable, easy to mix and match and was indicative of my own personal style. I make all the tassels by hand and sourced beads from India and Japan.

What is the inspiration behind the Spring/Summer collection?  Any must-have pieces?

My Spring/Summer collection is inspired by Kantha textiles. I love to mix pattern and texture in my wardrobe, so I wanted to design pieces that, when worn together, create a colorful textural pattern. Each piece looks beautiful on its own, but they are designed so that they can be worn together creatively. Must- have pieces this season would be the Commodore Tassel Necklace, the Jericho Tassel Bracelet and the Vonigo Wrap Bracelet. I love the wrap bracelet because it incorporates my love of textiles and it’s effortless to wear. Mix these together with a couple stackable stretch bangles and you’ve got yourself an arm party!

balsamvine2Your collection is very bohemian – perfect for festival season! Are there any trends you are seeing for the festival circuit this year?

Festival season is my favorite time of the year! Expect to see ethereal floral headdresses mixed with edgy biker boots and everyone’s festival staple; denim cut offs. Patterned kimonos are a must this season coupled with long tassel necklaces. (Editor’s note: we love the Commodore Tassel Necklace)

Who are your style icons?

Isabel Marant, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and the original boho babes, Jane Birkin and Stevie Nicks.
