The Style Spy’s Gift Guide: What To Buy For Your Bestest Girlfriends

It’s that time of year where you’re making a list and checking it twice. Holiday gift shopping and giving CAN be a stressful task. Lucky for you, I’ve put together a group of my favourite finds to help you along so that you have more downtime for the fun holiday stuff like watching Home Alone reruns, hopping from holiday party to holiday party and baking cookies). One of the tough parts of holiday shopping for that girl in your life (your lil’ sister, your best friend, your office bestie) is the distraction or the desire to want to shop and buy for yourself.  But my rule of thumb is one for her, one for me. I say there’s nothing wrong with that – you’ve had a long year and you deserve a little something something too.

1. ‘Jericho’ Native Shoes, $65 CAD, Gravity Pope
Every girl needs a pair of casual shoes to kick it in and Native’s have become a staple in shoe closets the past few years. The styles are inspired by iconic silhouettes made in an injection-molded, lightweight EVA. If you take a closer look at this ‘Jericho’ style, you’ll notice the Venetian Gold Glitter at the back of the heel (they also come in silver) – super festive for the holidays!

2. Komono ‘Winston Royale’ Watch in Rose Gold Black $125 CAD, Still Life (Vancouver), The Future of Frances Watson (Toronto), La Maison Simons & Meli-Melo (Montreal)
Like many, my iPhone is with me at all times, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate telling time on a watch. I’m a minimalist when it comes to accessories, so a beautiful watch like this rose gold number from Belgian brand Komono is perfect.

3. Rifle Paper Co. 2. ‘Bonjour’ 8×10 Print, $20 CAD, Chapters & 8×10 Gallery Frame $25 CAD, Chapters
I’m a big fan of Rifle Paper Co. stationary including this adorable print. When gifting something like a print, it’s an extra nice touch to also frame it – so it can be instantly hung up. Chapters is stock full of a variety of prints and frames. If your friend fell in love with Paris, try the Paris Map Print. If she’s got a cute pug – try the Pug Print. And if she’s a total fashion girl, you can’t really go wrong with a print from French Illustrator Garace Doré (one of my girl crushes).

4. Komono ‘Stella’ Sunglasses in Tortoise Honey $70 CAD, Still Life (Vancouver), The Future of Frances Watson (Toronto), La Maison Simons & Meli-Melo (Montreal)
A wicked pair of sunnies is must-have accessory in any girl’s wardrobe. Whether you’re dealing with those super sunny winter days, heading to LA or Mexico to beat the winter blues. The glasses provide UV400 protection.

5. Elizabeth & James Nirvana Black Eau de Parfum, $90, Sephora
This scent (the black version and white version) has been a favourite of mine since its launch. From the Olsen’s twins Elizabeth & James line – Nirvana Black is a mix of violet, sandalwood and vanilla described as sensual, mysterious and warm. For the best of both worlds, try the Nirvana Mini Rollerball Set for $24 CAD. It does wonders for quick touch-ups.

6. NARS Nail Polish in Fearless and L’Avventura, $23 CAD, Sephora
The best treat after a long day is Netflix and a new bottle of nail polish for an at-home mani (oh, and I’ll also take a home-cooked meal from the boyfriend). A pretty new nail polish is an instant treat for any girly girl. This luxurious polish makes a great Secret Santa gift for under $25.

7. Kate Space ‘Bonjour’ Pencil Case, $14, Chapters
Oh Kate Spade, you never fail us. I always recommend Kate Spade’s line of gifts – stationary, china and agendas as a go-to. The line is so so pretty. This little pencil case comes with a pair of black and white pencils, an eraser and pencil sharpener inside.

8. ‘Not Tonight’ Sleep Mask, $16 CAD, Chapters
I use a sleep mask for mid-afternoon naps and for travelling. It really does come in handy cause you don’t want light to ruin your beauty sleep.

9. Marc by Marc Jacobs Kiss Pop Up Color Stick, $35 CAD, Sephora
We all have a friend who loves luxurious things (ain’t nothing wrong with that). The Marc by Marc Jacobs cosmetics line launched last year and the Kiss Pop Up Color Stick is a fave – coming in 9 colours from soft pinks to bold brights, the lipstick is packaged in a shiny chrome crayon-inspired tube.

10. Fresh Rose Face Mask, $68 CAD, Sephora
Another evening stay-in ritual I love – lounging on the couch, an episode of the Gilmore Girls (sooo good) and an at-home face mask to restore my face from the stressful day. This Fresh Rose Face Mask is suitable for all skin types.  Apply for 5-10 minutes and rinse off for instantly healthy-looking skin.

11. Sephora Collection Gold Star Dual Boar Brush, $19 CAD, Sephora
Tangled hair is not a good look! A hair brush is essential in maintaining your pretty mane. And this travel-sized version from Sephora is so pretty in the festive gold – a limited edition version.

12. Fresh Sugar Lip Legends $65 CAD ($90 value), Sephora
Fresh is known for the Sugar Lip balms. This is a mini-set of seven, one pretty shade for each day of the week. Leave one in the car, at the office, in the bedroom, in your purse. Or break up the set and give them away to seven of your besties.

13. Stila Illuminating Beauty Balm $50 CAD, Sephora
Sometimes you wonder if you really need ALL these products in your daily regime. Well, a good illuminator will give you that lit-from-within glow. That extra youthful radiance we’re always on the hunt for.

14. EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm, $3.99 CAD, Shoppers Drug Mart
A winter fave. These handy little sphere-shaped round lip balms let you quickly apply balm on the top and bottom lips in one swipe. At under $5, they make the best stocking stuffers.

GiftGuide2014new15. Humlan Headphones, $60 CAD, Urban Ears
A good pair of headphones are essential for a daily transit commute or noisy office. Sometimes you just gotta crank up your tunes (currently I’m obsessed with St. Lucia) and zone out with everything around you. I love the bold colours in the Urban Ears collection and the fact that you can remove the headband and ear cushions to toss in the wash (nobody likes germs).

16. Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham, $32 CAD, Chapters
I’m steering away from buying iBooks and making an effort to pick-up hard copies. They’re much better to curl up in bed with. One title to note – Lena Dunham from HBO Girls recent release ‘Not That Kind of Girl’, an easy weekend read. Add a little extra something to the gift, by pairing it with your receivee’s favourite treats (that’d be Hariboo gummies for me).

17. Good Morning Beautiful Travel Mug, $12 CAD, Chapters
The morning commute. It’s really no fun. But you can make it a lil’ better with coffee (Americano please) and cute travel mug – one that reminds you just how beautiful you are every day. Positive affirmation!

18. Fitbit Flex, in Tangerine $99.95 CAD, Chapters
My friend Aimee raves about her Fitbit (she has multiple colours) and I’ve been seriously thinking about getting one (or if anyone wants to buy me a gift for the holidays, this is your chance!) The activity monitor tracks steps, distance and calories burned during the day and your sleep quality during the night. I’m all about fitness these days and taking care of yourself and your well-being.

So now you know, the gifts that I think will put a smile on your bestest girlfriend Now back to you! To celebrate the holidays, I’m giving away prizes with each of our gift guides. This week, we’re giving away 1 of 2 Fresh Beauty Gift Sets from Sephora! I hear these are hard-to-find now and sold out! But they can be yours.
