Say Hello To Beautiful Hair With The L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod 2.0

I’ve been using straightening products ever since my late teens. I have thick, wavy hair that can be frizzy when not styled. I also have chemically treated hair, which has been every colour between dark brown and bleach blonde. My hair is currently on the blonder side, which I prefer; however, my hair does not. It seems like the blonder I go, the worse my hair gets. The combination of bleaching with consistent flat ironing has left my hair in lacklustre shape. So when I was given the opportunity to try L’Oréal Professionnel’s new Steampod, I jumped at the chance! The Steampod is different from conventional flat irons as it uses steam and pro-keratin technology to straighten and visibly repair the hair while styling. Since steam is a form of indirect heat, it is gentler on the hair compared with traditional flat irons. Sound too good to be true? Well I can tell you – it’s not!

How it Works

steampodThe Steampod is not just a straightener; it is an entire steam smoothing system. For optimal results, it is recommended to use the L’Oréal Professionnel’s Steampod Styling Milk for Fine Hair or the Smoothing Cream for Thick Hair in combination with the Protecting Concentrate for beautiful ends. These products are enriched with pro-keratin ingredients and are activated by the Steampod during styling. As you move the Steampod through your hair, the device heats your hair while releasing a continuous flow of high-pressure steam. The steam opens the cuticles of the hair, which enables the pro-keratin products to be delivered deep within the hair’s fibres. The Steampod’s flexible, anodized floating plates gently seals the hair’s cuticle leaving a smooth and glossy finish that lasts up to three days.

Design Features

The original Steampod was launched in 2011 with the newest version released back in 2015. The second generation of the Steampod features a thinner, lighter, and more compact design. It has five heat settings ranging from 140 °C to 410 °C. It also features a removable comb that helps to detangle hair while straightening. Additionally, the newest version comes with Pro-Curl Technology, which allows you to create loose waves and curls. I have had no luck creating curls with the Steampod; however, when I got my hair professionally styled with the Steampod, the stylist gave me beautiful loose curls so it can be done!

How to Use

The Steampod is equipped with a tiny vessel that you fill with water. Once filled, turn the Steampod on and select your desired temperature. You will know the Steampod is ready to use when you hear short steam bursts, which are reminiscent of a conventional iron. While your hair is damp, apply the smoothing milk or cream and blow-dry until your hair is about 80 per cent dry. Before straightening as you normally would, apply some of the protecting serum to your ends and ensure to follow the direction of the arrows displayed on the Steampod. This guarantees the steam comes in contact with the hair before the plates do.

The Result

After using the Steampod and associated products for a period of time, I was surprised to find that my hair did seem healthier! It was smoother and shinier and my ends didn’t seemed as frayed. I also tend to have greasier hair but when I used the Steampod, my hair seemed to stay grease-free for longer. And as claimed by L’Oréal Professionnel, the styling does last up to three days.

Steampod L'orealGood to Know

My only major issue with the Steampod is that it’s quite bulky. Due to this, it wouldn’t be a device I would travel with. Hopefully L’Oréal Professionnel comes out with a travel version soon (hint hint!). The system is also quite pricey with the Steampod retailing for $250 and the cream/milk retailing for $25 and the serum retailing for $18. If you buy the whole system, you’re looking at a $300+ investment.  However, for beautiful hair, I would say it’s worth it! If you wanted to save a bit of money, you could always buy the Steampod on its own but to maximize results, it is recommended to use the entire system together.

So if you have naturally frizzy and chemically treated hair like myself or are interested in a healthier way to straighten your hair, I would highly recommend the Steampod. Your hair will thank you!
