Tried & Tested: Laneige Water Bank Soothing Gel Mask

I love a good hydrating skincare mask. It’s super relaxing and so soothing for my skin.  Sheet masks have always been popular in Asia, but over the last five years, they’ve grown in popularity in North America for their highly-concentrated skin replenishing formulas and ease of application. The Laneige Water Bank Soothing Gel Mask recently landed on my desk and I was pumped to try  it. And while it didn’t promise to shrink my pores or reduce fine lines, I liked that it addresses the basics: smooth, hydrate and moisturize.

Claim to fame… A hydro gel moisturizing soothing facial mask that hugs the face as it alleviates stress in the skin. The hydro gel lowers the skin’s surface temperature for soothing effects and seeps into the deep layers of the skin to keep it moisturized.

The formula… The gel mask is infused with 6 ionized moisturizing minerals that regulate the skin’s moisture and penetrates the skin to activate natural moisturizing genes in the skin. Quinoa extract protects skin from dryness and damage; natural olive oil reinforces the lipid barrier in the epidermis to retain moisture and smooth skin texture; green tea and chamomile provide further soothing and moisturizing benefits. The mask itself is not your traditional sheet mask made with a material that feels like a thin paper towel. Instead, the Laneige mask is made of a soft gel-like material (kind of like the feel and texture of a thin layer of jello).

How to use it… After cleansing my face and applying a toner, I applied the mask to my face. Unlike most sheet masks that I’ve tried in the past, this mask comes split in two pieces: one for the top of your face and another for the bottom. Next, you’re supposed to sit back for 30 minutes and relax while the gel absorbs into your skin (which in my books means vegging out and playing Candy Crush Saga on my iPhone). I actually went beyond the 30 minutes and just waited until the mask started to feel dry and all the gel had absorbed into my skin (about 45 minutes).

The result… When I peeled the mask off, my skin felt really refreshed, smooth and clear.  There was no film or residue left behind from this mask like other sheet mask formulas have left behind. I used this before bedtime on a random Sunday and also before my bridal shower to freshen up my skin. It really is a nice pick me up for the skin.

Good to know… Because the mask formulation is more gel-like than liquid-y, the mask was super slippery and a bit tricky to get out of the packaging. You have to be careful not to let it slip out of your hands and into the sink! If your skin is feeling parched and is in need of concentrated moisture, this is a great way to awaken, soothe and hydrate the skin quickly. Easily portable, it’s a great mask to take with you on your summer travels so you can re-hydrate your skin after a long flight. Use these to perk up your skin when needed or use on the regular, 2 to 3 times a week.
