Beauty Foods & Ingredients: What to Eat for Glowing, Clear Skin

Ever heard the saying ‘beauty starts from the inside out’? I’m aware that the saying was making reference to being a good person but it also applies to what you fuel your body with and the choices you make at the grocery store and while cooking your meals.

By now, I’m sure you’re well aware what foods are good for you and which are bad for you. Some foods are even more amazing when you find out that they have beauty benefits to help your skin, hair and nails look amazing without having to step into a spa or salon. Here are a few of many ingredients to consider next time you’re at the grocery store that are packed with health and beauty benefits.


What to add to your grocery list… Red Bell Pepper
Why… Vitamin C will help keep you skin young looking. Did you know that red bell peppers have more vitamin C than oranges?
How to incorporate it into your diet… Slice your raw pepper up into strips and dip them into some yummy hummus.


What to add to your grocery list… Garlic
Why… Helps prevent breakouts and maintain clear skin. Garlic also has antibiotic compounds making it one of nature’s best medicines for when you’re not feeling 100 percent.
How to incorporate it into your diet… Cook it into any Italian-based sauces, use it in a marinade for veggies or mix it in with a fresh tomato based bruschetta topping. Just make sure to have a breath mint with you for afterwards.


What to add to your grocery list… Fatty Fish (i.e. salmon, trout, mackerel)
Why… Because of all the omega-3 fatty acids in fatty fish beauty benefits include glowing skin, shiny hair and a hydrated scalp.
How to incorporate it into your diet… Salmon seems to be the popular choice but anchovies, sardines and mackerel are suppose to be great as well if you’re a little more adventurous than me when it comes to your fatty fish picks. A one pan dinner with salmon and seasoned veggies that I can just throw into the oven is a definite go-to for me.


What to add to your grocery list… Avocado oil
Why… We all know how amazing avo is, so naturally the oil must be fantastic for you too. Avo oil is great for healthy skin because of the amount of vitamins A, D and E along with omega-9 fatty acids. I picked up a litre of Avocado Oil from Costco just this weekend for about $15.
How to incorporate it into your diet… Drizzle it over veggies to roast or use it to sauté.


What to add to your grocery list… Pumpkin Seeds
Why… They are loaded with vitamin E, sulfur, omega-3 fats and zinc — all of which will heal, nourish, restore and hydrate your skin. The seeds can also help repair blemish marks after a breakout.
How to incorporate them into your diet… Buy them raw from the bulk section of your grocery store and mix them into homemade trail mix for an easy snack or add them as a crunchy salad topper. Since it is pumpkin season, buy a pumpkin, scoop out the seeds to roast with seasoning and make a jack-o-lantern to get you into the Halloween spirit.

What to add to your grocery list… Seaweed
Why…  Promotes strong nails, hair and skin.
How to incorporate it into your diet…  Sushi, duh. Also, you can find yummy snack packs that are lightly flavoured with sea salt.


What to add to your grocery list… Flax Oil
Why… It has a high concentration of Omega 3s which nourish and moisturize your hair and skin from within, and can even halt street related hair loss.
How to incorporate it into your diet… Blend it into a smoothie or mix it into some salad dressing.


What to add to your grocery list… Apple Cider Vinegar
Why.. It can help clear up acne so try this any time you’re having a breakout.
How to incorporate it into your diet.. Mix a tablespoon into a glass of water. Some recommend drinking it through a straw to avoid breaking down your tooth enamel.
