Incorporating a face mask regimen into my skincare routine has become more and more important. It forces me to set aside a bit of time to treat myself, even if it is just 15 minutes while giving my skin the treatment it deserves. Face masks can do all sorts of amazing things for your skin and luckily, The Body Shop recently launched three 100% vegan and two 100% vegetarian expert face mask recipes to target different skin care concerns. Each mask is made with your skin’s needs in mind to help get your skin looking and feeling healthy, all while being cruelty-free with ethically gathered ingredients.
I tried out two of their most popular masks which sell for $29 CAD each to compare how well they measured up to other similar masks on the market that retail for upwards $79 CAD. Check out my thoughts below.
The Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask is a tingling mud mask that is meant to detoxify your skin. Use this to unclog pores, make pores look more refined, to release impurities and toxins which will help reveal a healthy-looking, youthful glow.
The British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask is a hydrating mask for skin that needs to be quenched and re-plumped with moisture to reveal its dewy glow again.
Their recipes are packed with beauty superfoods and are formulated without paragons, silicone, mineral oils and paraffin. Yay!
The Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask contains bamboo charcoal which is known to draw out impurities and excess oils from the skin; green tea leaves which are rich in antioxidants and help exfoliate the skin; as well as Community Trade organized tea tree oil to help keep skin looking clearer.
The British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask is infused with natural ingredients such as real rose petals and essence of hand-picked roses that will replenish the skin’s water reserves; rosehip oil which repairs skin; Omega 3 and 6 that helps tone skin; and organic aloe vera which is known for its gentle, calming and soothing properties on skin.
How I Used the Masks
Depending on what my skin was in need of at the time, I’d select my mask and make sure my face was clean, cleansed and dry. Using a flat, paddle-shaped makeup brush I applied the mask all over my face while avoiding getting it too close to my eye and lip area. With the British Rose Mask, I’d even apply it down my neck as well. Then, I’d let the mask sit on my face for 15 to 20 minutes before removing it with warm water and a wash cloth.
I found that the Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask was really exfoliating, thanks to the tea leaves which was wonderful, however, I found my skin ended up a little red and blotchy after I removed the mask. So, I would avoid using the mask right before a special event or right before applying makeup. After a bit of time, the redness went away completely and I was left with smooth skin that was definitely more luminous.
British Rose Fresh Plumping Mask is such a treat to wear. It is so hydrating, soothing and just feels so nice on the skin. After removing the mask it makes for really great makeup application because your skin is prepped so well and plump.
I love them! Absolutely worth picking up and trying, I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up with more than one mask from the collection.
Another thing I absolutely love about these masks is, unlike sheet masks, which I also love, they give you more freedom while you wear them. When I have a sheet mask on, all I can really do it sit or lay down so that they don’t slide off my face. Whereas, with The Body Shop’s new masks you can apply and continue doing what you need to do, like finishing up daily chores around the apartment or cooking dinner.

If you pick up more than one mask, try multi-masking by mixing and matching different masks at once on different areas of your face. For example, if your t-zone tends to be more oily but your cheeks tend to be drier, try applying the Himalayan Charcoal Mask in down your t-zone and the British Rose Mask on your cheeks. Multi-masking will allow you to address multiple skin concerns in the same treatment.
