Girl of the Week: Melanie Lowe

Originally from Sudbury, Ontario, Melanie Lowe moved to Toronto and graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy. Melanie currently works in the market research industry and enjoys collecting old soul and girl group records and scouring the city for cute, vintage clothes. Meet Melanie.

Wearing…I’m wearing vintage boots, a bag from H&M, a dress from Sears, a leather jacket from Le Chateau, a cardigan from Value Village, and a scarf I stole from my sister.

My personal style is…I like to mix low-end with more low-end! I like scoring cool stuff at vintage stores and luckily I know how to sew so I can usually take something in a little or shorten the sleeves when I need to.

Most recent purchase…I just got a haul of cute dresses from a vintage store on Markham St. in Toronto. I’m a sucker for anything vaguely 70s and princess sleeves.

Drink of choice…I like Labatt 50. I can’t help it, I just do.

Favorite accessory…I like silver and turquoise jewelry… I feel like it never looks dated and I will wear it forever.

Three things in my bag…My iPod, ChapStick, and my non-smart phone that I use to call people and have them Google stuff for me when I need to.

Wardrobe staples…I’m pretty fond of black tights, my wayfarers, and these tall Minnetonka moccasin boots that I wore constantly for two years.

Things every girl should have…A bicycle, and a leather jacket.

Most prized possession…It’s a tie between my record collection and a mint green Fender acoustic guitar that was a gift from my dad.

Fashion pet peeves…I continue to be bewildered by girls who wear leggings as pants. Call me old fashioned, but it looks like they are wearing tights and forgot to put anything else on.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now…Austin, Texas is my favourite place. It has endless summer weather, barbeques, year-round patios, live music everywhere, vintage clothes, and lots of great record stores.
