Just like your makeup routine and your wardrobe, you have to switch things up a bit with your haircare each season. Summer is typically about effortless hairstyles that involve little to no heated tools while keeping your hair nourished, hydrated and protected from the sun.
Here are a few of the must-do styles and how to best care for your hair before, during and after being out in and enjoying the sunshine:
Achieve those coveted beachy waves:
Redken Fashion Waves 07, $22.59 CAD, available in select salons – Redken Canada’s Lead Stylist, Jorge Joao says the best way to create beach waves is to be organic about it. Grab random pieces of hair and wrap it around a curling iron or a wand. The idea is to be very random about it, wrap some pieces all the way to the ends and others leaving the ends out. This will give it a natural dishevelled feel. Finish with Redken’s Fashion Waves 07 for beachy texture.
Sea Spray Hair Mist, $13.95 CAD, Lush – If you have a natural wave in your hair try spritzing your fave sea salt spray all over and letting it air dry. It’s a great product to throw in your beach or pool bag to spray in while your hair is still wet from a swim.
Prep your locks for the sun:
Redken’s One United, $24.99 CAD, available at select salons – Jorge recommends prepping your hair with a good leave-in conditioner before hitting the beach or spending the day outside. This will help protect your hair and keep it moisturized throughout the day.
Don’t forget to bring along a hat too, for extra protection!
Easy, No Heat Hair Styles:
Redken Braid Aid 03, $24.99 CAD, available in select salons – Jorge says it’s all about braids and ponytails! Keep it simple and effortless. Combining a ponytail with a fishtail braid is always a great way to go for a quick, easy, heat-free style. Use Redken Braid Aid 03 for control and texture.
Just throw in a few mini braids here and there, throughout your hair for added interest which looks so fun when you wear your hair down or pulled up in a pony.
Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Dry Shampoo, $34 CAD, Sephora – Braids and ponytails are even better a few days after a hair washing, that way your hair has a little bit of grit and texture. Dry shampoo is always great to spray throughout your hair for some added texture too. I love using this trick, especially if I don’t have a texturizing spray handy or when you’re travelling and you don’t want to pack multiple hair products. If you’re not the best at braiding, YouTube has so many great tutorials so that you can learn within minutes. The Elizabeth and James dry shampoo is my favourite, I absolutely love the smell but I hear Drybar’s Triple Sec 3 –in-1 also fantastic!
What to do after the sun:
Nutiva Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil, $13.47 CAD, Amazon.ca – You cannot go wrong with a good ol’ coconut oil hair mask! You can even mix in a few drops of essential oils for added benefits and an amazing smell, depending on your preference. Mix the coconut oil and essential oils together in a little bowl and massage the mixture into your hair, putting the least amount of oil right on your scalp and roots. Leave it in for at least half an hour, heck, I leave mine on for a good hour or three before washing in out. You can find a good organic coconut oil and most grocery stores or even London Drugs.
John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Visibly Brighter Subtle Lightening Shampoo and Conditioner, $9.97 CAD each, Walmart – I’ve also been loving John Frieda’s Visibly Brighter Subtle Lightening shampoo and conditioner so far this summer! They’ve created a shampoo, conditioner and in-shower treatment for both blondes and brunettes. I don’t have any colour or highlights in my hair and love how my hair naturally lightens in the summer after I spend time in the sun. Using the shampoo and conditioner has amped up the results of my hair lightening and getting natural highlights, it’s still subtle, don’t expect anything as dramatic as visiting the salon but there is definitely a difference. It also makes my hair soft and touchable.
